About Sumitomo
The Sumitomo Group is a Japanese general trading company, and their products serve a diverse set of industries and applications such as construction, transportation, energy, food, consumer goods, and much more. The Sumitomo Group has a longstanding history that began with a 17th century book and medicine shop located in Kyoto, established by Masatomo Sumitomo. Soon after the store’s formation, Sumitomo’s brother in law utilized silver extracting technology to expand the company into a smelting business, and they later introduced products such as textiles, sugar, medicine, and materials from mining.
During the 1900’s when many Japanese companies were forced to restructure with rapid westernization, Sumitomo decided to refocus their operations on trading, manufacturing, and financing. As one of the major zaibatsu of Japan, Sumitomo Corporation was incorporated in 1919 as The Osaka North Harbour Co., Ltd. with a focus on real estate management, land grading, harbor repair, land reclamation, and more. When World War II destroyed much of Sumitomo’s infrastructure, the company had to rebuild with a small group of workers operating under the name Nippon Engineering Co., Ltd. Leading into the 1980’s, Sumitomo slowly grew once again, eventually adopting the name Sumitomo Corporation and moving their headquarters to Tokyo. Presently, Sumitomo continues to operate with the development of new products and services, and they have recently announced that their main market focuses lay in automotive, infrastructure, and other non-resource businesses.
