AVX Corporation is an American manufacturer of electronics components. The company has more than 9,900 employees and operates within the United States, Europe, and Asia. the company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kyocera Electronics Corporation.
AVX was founded in 1972 and began making ceramic capacitors as a subsidiary of Aerovox Corporation. In 1973, AVX became an independent company following the sale of Aerovox’s assets. The company expanded into the integrated circuit field, with a five year plan to expand operations. Throughout the 70s, AVX expanded to Europe and Japan. VX continued to grow throughout the 1980s, even as computer manufacturers began to ease off of purchasing capacitors. The decade ended with Kyocera purchasing $267 million of AVX’s stocks, making it a subsidiary of the Japanese manufacturer.
By 1995, sales had reached almost $1 billion thanks to the growth in the personal computer and cellphone markets, as well as rising demands in the automotive, home appliance, and medical industries for advanced electronic components. That same year, AVX entered the connector business and expanded its ceramic and tantalum capacitor manufacturing capabilities. By 2001, AVX had 26 plants in 12 different countries, 21,000 employees, and sales of $2.6 billion. On December 3rd, 2009, AVX announced that it was relocating its corporate headquarters to Greenville, South Carolina.

Products
- AVX has three main business units: passive components, KED resale, and connectors. Passive components include electrical components for automotive braking, cell phones, copiers, hearing aids, and locomotives.
