About Lycoming Engines

Lycoming is a leading manufacturer of piston engines for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Originally founded in 1845 by Ellen Curtis Demorest, The Demorest Manufacturing Company originally produced manufactured products like sewing machines, bicycles, typewriters, duplicators, gas irons, and printing presses. In 1907, the company was sold and restructured as the Lycoming Foundry and Machine Company, and shifted production to the expanding automobile industry, producing engines for companies like Cord, Auburn, Duesenberg, Locomobile, Paige, Graham, McFarlan, and Checker. When World War I began, Lycoming also began to manufacture engines to power military trucks and ambulances.

In 1927, Errett L. Cord purchased Lycoming, and expanded the company into designing and manufacturing marine racing engines, industrial motors, and in 1929, ventured into the aviation industry with the R680 radial engine. In 1933, Lycoming became a part of Aviation Corporation, later known as AvCo, and in 1938 continued to play a part in aviation history when it powered Igor Sikorsky's 0-145 helicopter, the first successful rotary-wing aircraft.

Throughout the 20th century, Lycoming would continue to manufacture engines for civilian and military purposes, including receiving the E-Award from the Army Air Corps during World War 2 for their contributions to the war effort. In 1967, Lycoming developed the first FAA-certified aerobatic piston engine, and in 1987, became a part of Textron when Textron purchased Avco. Lycoming has continued to receive awards for manufacturing and workplace healthiness, and has continued to new products and manufacturing processes.
